We are now in the eleventh week of The Artist’s Way writers workshop by Julia Cameron; a twelve week program for unblocking creativity. Our first class began on February 11, at WORDS! Bookstore (aka, Asbury Book Co-op) on Cookman. It has been a saving grace in the midst of this current pandemic. When we started out the world was normal, then somewhere along the way we had to reassess, make adjustments, and learn new technology, in the hope of continuing this journey and seeing it through to fruition.
I have to say, this current group of participants is not only resilient and committed, they are showing themselves to be inspiring individuals whose support of each other’s creativity, as well as their own, is blossoming in ways they quite possibly could not have imagined.
With God as the central figure in The Artist’s Way, he is described as the “Great Creator” and brought into the forefront in order to help us connect with our own Divine creativity within. In week four, one of the assignments is to write a prayer; an artist’s prayer of inspiration. Due to COVID-19, that week ended up being the last time we were able to meet in person, before the virus took hold and accosted our lives.
I like to put a different spin on this assignment, so after each person wrote their own prayer we read them aloud and took turns selecting one favorite line from each person’s prayer. We then used each of those lines to create one unified prayer. This exercise is the foundation that transforms a group of individuals into a tribe. Below is an Artist’s Prayer the Winter-Spring 2020 tribe created together.
Artist’s Prayer 2020
My Prayer goes to the clouds..1 May I be receptive and open to the nudges, the signs, and the magic that you bless my path with..2 Help me to continue to nurture my soul, to create freely and wildly..3 When my inner critic knocks me down, sing a song of praise in my ear..4 Open my heart and imagination to something greater than myself, affirm in me that I am good enough to be loved just as I am..5 Help me to let go of fear and jump in with my entire being..6 Hold me as I am birthed forward by your love..7 Let go and fall, what a nice soft sound I make..1

Everyone is creative, whether we call ourselves “artists” or not. The Artist’s Way has always been a personal journey. And so, our enforced solitude brings us close to the spirit of the book.
It is my hope that during this period of uncertainty, we lean into our creativity, awakening our spirit, so that we feel more deeply alive.~ Julia Cameron, Santa Fe, New Mexico
