Creating good design by combining the elements of Feng Shui with the principles and elements of interior design can produce a beautiful, well balanced environment. Sound complicated? Not really, creating balance in Feng Shui is mostly about bringing in the elements of fire, earth, water, metal, and wood and placing them in the appropriate life aspect areas. Creating balance within the elements of interior design is mostly about combining line, form, & shape together with texture, pattern, and ornament in way that expresses and supports proportion, scale, unity, variety, rhythm, and emphasis; the design principles. Proportion addresses how the elements within the room relate to one another. Scale refers to how the size of an object compares with the size of the space it’s in. Unity and variety together create harmony, and allow a person to experience the design as a whole while creating the rhythm that directs the eye as it moves around the room. Emphasis is your focal point in the room. Knowing how to utilize these elements and principles, and how they relate to Feng Shui can produce a beautiful, balanced, and harmonious environment that will help manifest the things you want to bring into your life. For example, an animal print pattern is considered fire energy; knowing where this type of pattern in your room will support the life aspect of Fame and Reputation. The texture of rattan or wicker is considered wood and supports the Family aspect of life. Mirrors and glass, reflective surfaces, are considered a water element and are best suited for the Career or Wealth area of your home; the main entrance and back left corner, they will support prosperity and a successful career.
No matter how you choose to incorporate these elements and principles together the key is to always have balance within the elements themselves. Any room that has too much of one element can produce a disturbing, unpleasant feeling in the space, a failed design, and stagnation to the particular life aspect of that room or area in your home.
