Last weekend I did some TV binge-watching and stumbled upon the new movie by Netflix called The Christmas Chronicles. It’s a fun adventure story that also happens to feature some of Asbury Park’s local musicians!
The story starts out a bit slow with this brother and sister duo. But as the younger sister, who takes over the family responsibility of videotaping Christmas, gets an idea to “catch Santa in the act”, her older brother is about to spill the beans. Naturally, he doesn’t when he realizes how obsessed she is with this task and wants to show proof that Santa exists.
Once Christmas Eve arrives the story takes off – literally and it will keep you entertained throughout this action-packed Christmas adventure.
If you’ve ever wondered how Santa gets all those presents delivered all over the world in one night, well this movie, along with a bit of magic, just could give a plausible explanation. Possibly making a believer out of the even the biggest of non-believers.
Kurt Russell does a great job of playing the coolest Santa there ever was. But the highlight of this film is when he gets arrested and thrown into jail. Christmas spirit is at an all-time low and Santa sees only one cure – music! He magically turns his cellmates into an all-star blues-rock band and has an impromptu jam session, rocking it out to Elvis Presley’s Jail House Rock, as a way to revive the spirit of Christmas. Doing the vocals himself, I might add.
His cellmates are none other than Asbury Park musicians. You will be pleasantly surprised to see the familiar faces of Steven Van Zandt and his band Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul with locals like Marc Ribler on guitar, Jack Daley on bass, JaQuita May on vocals, and two of the original Disciples of Soul: Eddie Manion on baritone sax and Stan Harrison on saxophone.
Other members of the band include Clark Gayton, trombone; Ravi Best, trumpet; Ron Tooley, trumpet; Anthony Almonte, percussion; Andy Burton, keys; Lowell Levinger, piano; Richard
The movie doesn’t disappoint offering a “cherry on top” ending and surprising the viewers with what they’ve been wondering since about halfway through the movie. So if you’ve got some downtime this holiday season, be sure to watch it. The Christmas Chronicles is one of the best holiday movies I’ve seen in a long time. An Asbury Insider favorite.
